My 12 month fellowship in Lyon, France was memorable and I would recommend it to anyone who is considering travelling to Europe. I shared my time between Mr Tarik ait si Selmi, head of the ARTRO institute and Professor Phillip Neyret, Head of Orthopaedics, Hôpital de la Croix-Rousse. As a Fellowship should, it challenged my own preconceived ideas of Orthopaedics from postgraduate training and often took me out of my comfort zone.

Part of my fellowship involved interesting clinical and scientific relevant research. In collaboration with the ARTRO Institute and the Centre Albert Trillat, Hôpital de la Croix-Rousse, Lyon, I published a paper in the Journal of Arthroplasty on the benefits of a collar on an uncemented prosthesis. I presented three posters at the 12th Meeting of the Combined Orthopaedic Associations in Glasgow. I also attended the 84th French Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology annual conference in Paris.

As a family we immersed ourselves in the culture, language and living, even following the locals on their holidays. Lyon is a beautiful city to live in with much to learn and enjoy both professionally and as a family. We have many great memories from our time there and have made lifelong friends. We hope to return to France often to maintain both our professional and family ties.
